Stakeholders need to be aware of the potential hazards of lithium ion batteries and strategies to prevent and prepare for incidents. State and local governments including New York City, several cities in New Jersey and upstate New York have launched emergency-level lithium ion use and care initiatives to reduce the unprecedented number of fatal fires.  This course will review safe use and handling of these batteries, protecting both individuals and the environment, leading to safer workers and communities.  

Topics Covered:   

1. Key concepts of renewable battery science, technology, and battery management systems (BMS).

2. Evaluating and preventing thermal runaway fire propagation in battery energy storage systems

3. Interrelated hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries including hazard communication, chemical reactivity, fires and explosions  

4. Roles and responsibilities of host/owners and controlling employers concerning fire, electrical hazards, and emergency response


Who should attend? 
Safety and health trainers, managers, gig workers, supervisors responsible for fire hazards.

Offered through Zoom Virtual Learning Platform. This course is not limited to students in Region 2 (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands). Anyone in the United States can attend.
