The Critical Role of First Responders

First responders are often the only medical professionals an overdose patient will see.

With more than half of patients refusing hospital transport or leaving before treatment

begins, these moments at the scene are pivotal. A few compassionate, well-chosen

words can open a door to recovery when it might otherwise remain closed.

Who Can Participate in the Training?

The Five Minutes to Help training is specifically developed for first responders, who

are often the only healthcare provider the individual may engage with after an

overdose. As such, the large majority of those trained to date are first responders

from the world of EMS, law enforcement, and fire fighters.

More recently, however, professionals from the social work / prevention services

and peer recovery arenas have also participated, often bringing meaningful, lived

experiences in recovery to the process.

Five Minutes to Help: A Two-Part Training

Part 1:  ‘5 Minutes to Help: An Intro to Substance Use Disorder, Treatment, and Resources for EMS’ is an engaging, one-hour, online training  . that introduces participants to the program.
