All About Podcasts

What is a podcast?

A podcast is a prerecorded audio file that can be downloaded for free over the internet. The term "pod" in podcast is derived from the popular mp3 (audio) player; the Apple iPod. Most podcasts are produced and made available at specific intervals, similar to daily/weekly/monthly issues of magazines or newspapers.

How do I listen to a podcast?

There are many ways to listen to a podcast: through our website www.safetycast.org, on your mp3 player (iPod or others), or on Apple iTunes.

How do I know when podcasts are released?

Podcasts can be "subscribed" to, like any newspaper. Once you've subscribed, you'll be updated whenever a new podcast is released. You can subscribe through your web browser, or through Apple iTunes. Podcasts utilize something called an RSS feed, which stands for Really Simple Syndication. Once you have added this feed to your application(s), they will routinely check to see if any new editions are released.

Okay, I can listen to your podcasts now, but what is an "enhanced" podcast?

An enhanced podcast is a podcast that also incorporates a still-image capability. If you're using a computer with an application that can show an enhanced podcast (Apple iTunes), or using an mp3 player that has video capability (Apple iPods), then you will be able to enjoy the benefits of an enhanced podcast. The images are usually, in our case; slides from the presentation being given.

How much is this going to cost me?

Absolutely nothing! You can view these podcasts and enhanced podcasts for free over the internet. You can view them free through our website (using the free Quicktime Player), or using the free Apple iTunes software (recommended). If you want to carry the podcasts with you to listen to at your leisure; you will need to purchase an mp3 player.
