Gun Violence Prevention - Handout

According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the United States experiences epidemic levels of gun violence, claiming over 30,000 lives annually, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For every person who dies from a gunshot wound, two others are wounded. Every year, approximately 100,000 Americans are victims of gun violence. In addition to those who are killed or injured, there are countless others whose lives are forever changed by the deaths of and injuries to their loved ones.

Gun violence touches every segment of our society. It increases the probability of deaths in incidents of domestic violence, raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and among those who attempt suicide, places children and young people at special risk, and disproportionately affects communities of color.

Mass shooting tragedies seem to be never ending, and they receive significant media attention. However, it's not only the high-profile mass shootings that we must work to prevent. It is also the daily death-by-guns that occur quietly, without national press coverage, that claims more than 30,000 lives every year, that we must also prevent.

Please join us to learn the important roles that public health professionals can play in this effort.

 Keynote Presenter

This year’s Keynote Presenter is Lisa Fujie Parks, MPH, the Associate Program Director of Prevention Institute, with offices in California and Washington, DC. It’s mission is to build prevention and health equity into key federal, state, local, and organizational policies and actions to ensure that the places where all people live, work, play and learn foster health, safety and wellbeing. Lisa will highlight a set of recommendations which illustrate that one program or policy alone is not going to significantly reduce gun violence, but rather, through comprehensive strategies, we can achieve safety in our homes, schools, and communities.

William J. Castner, JD

Special Advisor on Firearms to New Jersey Governor’s Office

With a significant background in addressing responsible gun safety, Mr. Castner will share important updates in New Jersey’s regulations and policies related to firearm use, gun safety, and other important aspects of gun violence prevention.

Elizabeth Sloan-Power, PhD

Rutgers Department of Social Work

Center on Gun Violence Research

Dr. Sloan will share the important work of the School of Public Health’s new Center on Gun Violence Research. The new Center will conduct critical, multi-disciplinary research to yield new understandings and actionable steps to prevent gun violence, and promote the health and safety of our communities in New Jersey and across the country.

In addition to the lecture portion of the program, the Symposium includes poster presentations and exhibitors, highlighting a range of public health research and practice.
